    Great post, E.D. But it’s not quite true, is it, that “no trees were harmed in the making of this blog”. I mean, blogs run on servers and servers run on electricity and the companies that service them, etc. etc. There was a study a while back that got a ton of attention about how doing a Google search actually emits more carbon than burning through a gallon of gasoline, or something like that. A sobering thought …Report

    I’m sure there was at least some tongue in cheek when you titled this post but even as a light hearted comment it needs some rebutting.

    Plenty of trees were harmed judging by the amount of documentation accompanying my laptop. Maybe your intuition was all you ever needed to become computer savvy and hence knowledgeable enough to create blogs. But I bet you have lots of paper goods stashed somewhere regarding computers.

    On another level the toxic materials found in computers, and their manufacturing is considerable.

    No, actually I thought of that. For everything there’s a trade-off. So yes, it was more tongue-in-cheek than anything. But hopefully as we pursue more renewable energy sources we can find ways to power the internet that won’t require such damage to the environment. And hopefully the internet itself will help us do that….Report
