kindle v twitter
I suppose the difference for me between the adopting of these two technologies – Twitter and Kindle – neither of which I use (though we do have a Twitter account tied to this blog), is that the former replaces nothing, while Kindle replaces books. In other words, while Kindle would require that I read books on a gizmo rather than off the printed page, Twitter requires no such sacrifice or trade-off. And there is no reason one can’t be both a Twitterer and the proud owner of a shotgun, at least not in America.
I really want a Kindle so I can cut down on one more thing I have to store in my house. Anymore, I can’t imagine having to set aside space for CDs (replaced by mp3s), computer games (replaced by Steam) and movies (replaced by streaming services and Netflix).
The trouble is that I read mostly old/used novels, comic books, and art books. Kindle copies of old books are usually as cheap as used books on Amazon even with shipping, and the limited capabilities to display photographs really keeps it from being adequate for comic and art books.Report
Chris – All of those apply to me as well. When I played PC games I mostly did so through Steam (which is great). I get my movies via Netflix or watch shows online (no need for a tv…). Music I generally just stream on my computer.
But books….no. I love my big bookshelf. I’d like my own library. I never minded having them no matter how many times we’ve moved, even though they are one of the biggest pains to move. I don’t know what it is. Books are sacred somehow in ways that DVDs and CD’s simply aren’t.Report
I look at the kindle as being an accessory for reading. Like a comfy chair bought especially for reading.
There are books I’ll want to have on my shelf, and books that don’t require it. Find a lovely hardcover edition of a favorite you’ve read electronically, then by all means buy it. It’s like digital photographs. You don’t print all of them, let alone print and frame.
And of course not everything you want to read comes as a book. I have lots of Apple server software manuals and programming references on my kindle.Report
Twitter is a tool for all those people who are attention whores. Who really cares that you just bought a Big Mac and ate some fries with it lol.
Kindle on the other hand will actually allow some people to read more.
