Remembering Andrew Sarris

Rose Woodhouse

Elizabeth Picciuto was born and reared on Long Island, and, as was the custom for the time and place, got a PhD in philosophy. She freelances, mainly about disability, but once in a while about yeti. Mother to three children, one of whom is disabled, two of whom have brown eyes, three of whom are reasonable cute, you do not want to get her started talking about gardening.

  1. I thought of you when I heard this on the news this morning. I remember you speaking of him, and of the admiration you expressed for his thinking.

And I think you shortchange yourself by implying a recommendation from such as him was anything but a reflection on your merit.Report

I never took a class with him, but he was long one of my favorite critics – genuinely thoughtful, humble, and completely in love with the medium. He deserves a lot of credit, in particular, for helping overcome the forces of genre snobbery in his own time. Without his influence, it’s quite possible Westerns would never have been taken seriously as a genre, and Hitchcock’s films might still be dismissed as fluff.* He will be missed.Report
