Just Hit Your Thumb With A Hammer Instead

Sam Wilkinson

According to a faithful reader, I'm Ordinary Times's "least thoughtful writer." So I've got that going for me, which is nice.

I just want to assure you that maybe I’m not doing the right thing either, but I’m not doing the right thing for the best of reasons… as opposed to those people over there not doing the right thing for the worst of reasons.Report

Not sure this meets the pretty high bar of “open immigration restrictions”, but with post-earthquake struck Haiti, the US granted temporary protected status,

The Obama administration extended a special immigration status on Friday to Haitians living illegally in the United States that protects them from deportation for 18 months and allows them to work here. […] The administration’s decision followed a rising chorus of calls for the temporary status after the earthquake on Tuesday. On Friday, 80 representatives and 18 senators, including Democrats and Republicans, sent appeals to the administration to grant the status, as did the conference of Roman Catholic bishops. (NYT, Jan. 2010)

And the US has since granted extensions of the status (NYT, May 2011).

I suspect part of the reason this doesn’t happen more* is simply logistical, disaster struck areas far away might benefit more from aide provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (the US government is the largest single donor to UNHCR, pdf) and the International Committee of the Red Cross than devoting money to transporting people hit by a humanitarian catastrophe thousands of miles to the US.

Which is not to say the migration discourse in the US is functional or sensible, but there is some space for the idea of easing restrictions in special cases on humanitarian grounds.

    Well done, Sam.
I agree that the Republicans appeal to race mongering to maintain a base.
I mentioned unions because historically, unions have been among the most vocal opponents to immigration, and because Democrats tend to do whatever the unions tell them to.
The rest of your post sounds like #ThatBookWithTheSheepOnTheCover Ironic.
    To Creon:
Yes, the US extended some protection to Haitians already in the US.
But it did almost nothing for those who were still in Haiti, those who had family in the US willing to sponsor them, or for those who required medical attention.
Instead we sent them FEMA trailers and Sean Penn.
Sean actually did a lot of good. FEMA not so much.Report
