A Steam Machine in Every Home

Ethan Gach

I write about comics, video games and American politics. I fear death above all things. Just below that is waking up in the morning to go to work. You can follow me on Twitter at @ethangach or at my blog, gamingvulture.tumblr.com. And though my opinions aren’t for hire, my virtue is.

    I pick bridge to nowhere.

I use Steam with some regularity, but not for Steam games… for games by other developers that make me use Steam to play their games. None of them are games that I would want as a console (and get off my lawn, if you please).

Steam, for me, is a mostly functional if somewhat clunky distribution system (some games even make me initiate through Steam, and then have their own cloud based DRM system)… I wouldn’t follow them anywhere.

But, like all things new… I’m probably not their target demographic (anymore). {sniff}Report

Console games seem slow and clunky,
and playing them on a PC seems to be really, really annoying.

Whatevs. The real question is “Will they get the water right?”
Unreal totally sucks at modeling it.Report

Their target market for this is console gamers, since you’re not one (and neither am I any more), this doesn’t do anything for us.Report

I notice that the link to “a new Half-Life possibly” is blank. That’s a very good meta-joke, Ethan.Report

Are there parallels to be drawn between SteamOS and platforms such as Android and Apple’s operating systems? Android, like SteamOS, is really Linux under the covers. Apple’s OSes run over a fork of the BSD operating system.

Interfaces come and go. Some thrive, others perish. But system software, that’s another beast entirely. Microsoft has resorted to virtualisation to keep the developer community from running away. But that’s not an effective, long-term strategy. Three operating systems on the same box? Insane.Report

I do not know to what extent that I am representative but I would buy a Steam box if only to be able to play my Steam games on my television. Sure, there are a lot of games that require a mouse and keyboard, but there are also a lot that don’t and I’d love to sit down and fiddle about with “consolish” games on the console.

If I have the same account in both places? They’ve sold a box to me already.

If I don’t? I don’t see what value is given me by a Steam Box that I won’t enjoy with my PS4.Report

The only comment I have to add is that I find Steam itself pretty much indispensible. I love buying without going to EB Games or whatever other local villain is on hand.Report

I’ve been back-filling my library between Steam and GoG.

I really need a new chair for my desk. I got the Steam sale on ALL THE STAR WARS GAMES EVER so now have sort of a list to go through, AND I just picked up Final Fantasy VII and Crusader Kings II, and I’m still enjoying Civ V…Report

I likely shouldn’t admit this, but when I first saw the headline on the FP I wondered why you were writing a post about a carpet cleaner machine.Report
