We’ve had a handful of discussions here about what states constitute the Midwest. I have an official answer, from the U.S. Government itself.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics calculates the Consumer Price Index both nationally and regionally. They define the Midwest as (roughly east to west):
– North Dakota
– South Dakota
Conveniently, that’s pretty much my definition. And it’s the federal government, so, it’s authoritative, right? Oklahoma? Not even close. Missouri? Try harder, maybe you’ll be more successful next time. Pennsylvania? Sorry, you’re a Mid-Atlantic state and you might as well just accept the fact. Kansas? Hmm, I can’t explain including Nebraska but not Kansas. But it’s the government, so of course they screwed up a little bit. But it’s official anyway! So if we want Kansas to be Midwest, we’ll just need to vote for politicians who promise to make the Bureau of Labor Statistics promote Kansas to Midwesterndom.
