Raw!
So a friend of mine told me that I should check out Too Bright, the third album by Perfume Genius (the stage name of Mike Hadreas), which was released late last month to generally favorable critical reviews. So to Spotify I went, and shuffle gave me “Grid.” I was probably 30 seconds in when I realized that my friend knows me better than I thought: “Grid” is the sort of sparsely-worded, heavily electronic, over-the-top contemporary indie pop that fits like a transmitter into one of my most prominent musical receptors. And it’s good.
Then after a couple of interesting but forgettable songs, maybe a little too Arcade Fire for my taste (he’s from Seattle, which might be too close to Canada to avoid Fire syndrome), but not bad. Then the shuffle gave me “Queen,” which is less electronic than “Grid,” though equally sparsely worded. In this case, however, the words sting:
Don’t you know your queen?
Ripped, heaving
Flowers bloom at my feet
Don’t you know your queen?
Cracked, peeling
Riddled with disease
Don’t you know me?No family is safe
When I sashayDon’t you know your queen?
Gleaming
Wrapped in golden leaves
Don’t you know me?
Rank, ragged
Skin sewn on in sheets
Casing the barracks
For an ass to break and harness into the fold.
Basically the nastiest of gay stereotypes thrown back at you (No Politics!). It’s inescapably raw, anger and insecurity mixed and laid bare.
Time, I think, to go listen to the first two albums.

I missed this show at Matador 21. I had a vague sense that PG was sort of Xiu Xiu-like, and I’ve seen Xiu Xiu, and while it was interesting, it wasn’t nearly as tuneful as these tracks are (weirdly, his voice kind of reminds me of Andy Bell’s).Report
I think I missed him at SXSW this year or last. This is something I say frequently.Report
“Queen” is one hell of a song, and I’m hoping the new album is great. Maybe it will be like Radiohead way back in the days of yore, semi-quietly doing mildly interesting things for a few years, then suddenly coming out with something awesome and new.Report
Listen to it on Spotify. It’s not consistently great, but it has moments.Report
