It should be noted that to be an airline transport pilot by US regs takes 1500 hours of flying time, plus a couple of ground school periods. The US system is very different from the Lufthansa system where they train folks just to be an airline pilot. An airline transport pilot gets a physical every 6 months. You go private pilot, instrument commercial and then go from single engine to multi engine. Due to the way it works in the US you likley get a flight instructors certificate, in order to pay for some of the needed hours as well.Report

The issue with the Germanwings crash appears not to be experiential but psychological. Co-pilot locks himself in the cockpit and deliberately steers the craft into a mountain. Something got torsional in the fellow’s mind.

That’s unusually scary. what can be done, especially in a common carrier situation (Mon Tiki is a charter vessel, but I assume also a common carrier as she offers her services to the general public) to not only prevent harm arising out of operator negligence, but to make sure that the person at the controls isn’t dangerous to herself and others?Report

Probationary periods aren’t just about gaining experience. They are also offer a chance for in individual’s quirks to emerge, be noted, and be evaluated as to whether or not they should be a source of concern.Report
