One of the things that Coates said on his blog early on was “go to a black barbershop”. I haven’t done that literally, but metaphorically. Just pay attention to the black people in arm’s reach. Say hi, and listen to them. Understand that there’s no such thing as The Black Opinion. This is a thing that gives people who might be seen as Black Spokesman (such as Chris Rock) a hard time. And if I, as a white person, am familiar with more than one Black Opinion, it makes it easier for them.

Sometimes nobody who’s name begins with the letter “B” gets nominated for an Oscar, and that’s just random happenstance. We can’t afford to believe that the lack of nominations of African Americans is also random happenstance, but it would be nice to get to a place where it wasn’t that hard to believe.Report
