Weekend!

Playoffs! Skating! Cleaning!

This was supposed to be a hell week at work for me, but it turned out not so bad. Nonetheless, I’m ready for the weekend…and what a weekend it will be.

Friday night, I’m going to get new skates. I’ve been suffering through skates that just kill my feet for the last couple of years, and I’m not going to do it anymore. We’ve got a decent public rink nearby, and we’re just a few blocks from “the world’s longest skating rink”, the Rideau Canal (hence my blog’s name), so it’ll be quite worth it to get some better skates.

The girls finally learned last year, and now they’re a bit obsessed.

Saturday, of course, is the start of the NFL playoffs, so I’ll be watching many hours of football. We dodged a bullet in the McLeod household when the Packers beat the Lions, sending the Lions to Seattle for the first round. I’m a life-long Seahawks fan (as is the 5-year-old, now) and my eldest daughter became a Packers fan a couple of years ago (whom she calls the “Gs”—it’s her first initial, so she was drawn to the logo). It would have been tense if there’d been a Packers-Seahawks game this week.1

Unfortunately, my Dad’s a life-long Giants fan, and they’re heading to Green Bay to play the Packers. Inter-generational tension persists. The daughter, becoming rather zen-like, has decided that’s okay, even good, because if our teams play each other, we can all just cheer for the winner the next week. We’ll see how this works out in practice.

There’ll be more stuff to do this weekend: we’ve got to do some cleaning around the apartment (and hopefully fix the fridge), put away the last of the Christmas decorations (does mentioning this break the No Religion! rule?)2 and try to set up a play date or two for the girls.

But mostly, his weekend will be about skating and football…just as January should be.

So…what’s on your docket?Notes:

  1. She became a “Gs” fan a couple of years ago during the NFC championship game against Seattle. That didn’t end well for her. []
  2. In Jaybird’s absence, I’m going to issue a tentative ruling of “No.” — BL []

  2. Work, work, and more work. Co-worker got sick on the way over here and I had to spend some of the time I wanted to devote to maintenance to taking him to the hospital (that’s a post and a half, right there) and so, this weekend, I get to play catchup.

    But everybody’s good now.

We’re going off to get some kebab.

  3. The entire valley will be scoured by rain of legendary proportions *and* the DVR is full, so we’re going to sit inside with the fireplace on and watch all the TV. “Designated Survivor” went for Wacky Conspiracy instead of West Wing, but we’ll finish out the season because dammit we started. “Timeless” has held our interest so far. We have all of “Frequency” in the can, ready to go.

  4. We’re expecting snow again, which puts Junior’s wrestling match in jeopardy. We wait on pins and needles to see if it will happen Saturday. My oldest brother is staying at my place since his last minute trip to the hospital. I’ll probably be done nursing him back to health tonight or tomorrow. I’d like to meet up with some girlfriends to get pedicures on Sunday and get some reading done.

This weekend and in to next week I’m tapering off of some of my IVF medications, thank goodness. I can’t wait for the day I don’t have to stab myself with needles any more! I’d like to look at buying a bed this weekend, because every pregnant person deserves to have the most comfortable place to rest between trips to the bathroom. I’m quickly approaching the send trimester and I’m really looking forward to the fun part of pregnancy.

  5. I’m writing a “Go to hell” letter, and I’m halfway through.
I want to make sure there are sufficient instructions that getting lost on the way is not an issue.

It has its humorous* moments. It has stark drama. A little touch of the macabre here and there, though it most often tapers seamlessly into the absurd.
It’s high-brow sprinkled with some gutter snipe moments, both caustic and ribald.

Someone’s going to really enjoy receiving this “Go to hell” letter.

Maybe I should tell people to “Go to hell” more often.**
