Weekend!

Jaybird

Jaybird is Birdmojo on Xbox Live and Jaybirdmojo on Playstation's network. He's been playing consoles since the Atari 2600 and it was Zork that taught him how to touch-type. If you've got a song for Wednesday, a commercial for Saturday, a recommendation for Tuesday, an essay for Monday, or, heck, just a handful a questions, fire off an email to AskJaybird-at-gmail.com

    Oh man, yes.

You know what else is a Sisyphean task? Grading. I get a batch done and then I get ANOTHER batch. It’s a good weekend when I can get my grading done before Friday evening.

I have a long weekend this weekend – amazingly (because I teach at a state school and because I didn’t think evangelical Protestant Christians – of our student body that identifies religiously, that’s the majority – did much for Good Friday). I do need to do “big” grocery shopping (hour’s round trip) but tomorrow I am baking a cake (so I can break my “fast from desserts” on Easter) and generally relaxing, because I worked really hard last week and the experiment I was running has concluded, and the next one has not started yet.Report

I have Aaron type projects going on – steam bending wood back to original shapes, scraping old varnish, aligning end bells on vintage motors, etc. Spring is starting so the wife is out and about gardening and hopefully emptying the greenhouse that the spare bedroom has become. So all that, along with hopefully getting caught up on some reading (ha!).Report

Congratulations on the health. Cholesterol is a great case study in confirmation bias. You could probably predict someone’s level to the single digit based on how dismissive they are of its importance. Compared to cholesterol, politics is a realm of open-minded inquiry.

The end of Lent. I’ve been working my way through the Dialogue of St. Catherine of Siena. Challenging – it always takes me a while to get momentum when I’m doing spiritual reading. But it was a great choice. It’s generally the case that Dominicans focus on the intellect while Franciscans focus on the will (love of God and neighbor). Catherine was a Dominican – there’s nobody more intellectual than a 14th century peasant girl from Siena – but with her, there’s a focus on self-knowledge leading to greater love of God, and love of God leading to greater self-knowledge.

I made it a couple of pages past the midway point in the past 40-some days. I can’t decide if I’ll keep going at it a little at a time or if I should save it for next Lent.Report

Congratulations! Healthy is such a difficult goal to achieve for so many of us these days. You have made quite the achievement.

One of my friends is moving close to me, so I’m baking housewarming brownies tonight. My mom is fresh out of the hospital with a shoulder replacement so Junior and I are visiting her this weekend. I’d like to make my annual trip to the Tulip festival because the daffodil festival is too far away :(. There I will collect flowers to bring to my friend who is making probably the most difficult parenting decision of her life and moving her child with a disability out of their family home.

I’d like to make it through the weekend without gaining any weight. I’m 25/40 weeks pregnant and I just read a “fun fact” for the week that says my uterus is the size of a soccer ball. I don’t think I can get any bigger! I’ve taken up physical therapy for my hips and the exercises they gave me make me feel like I was run over by a car, so I think it’s working, lol.Report

  6. In the past month, I’ve spent two weeks in Europe, three days in the east coast, and a week in Hawaii. Finally home, and don’t have to get on another airplane for a whole month.

The flight home from North Carolina was on United; I emerged relatively unscathed. I missed the connection in Chicago because of weather. When I asked the flight attendants en route if I’d make it, they had no idea, because apparently all that high-tech communications equipment only transmits cat pictures. But they did book me on a later flight, so I got home only 90 minutes late.Report

So so so so ready for my celebratory 4-day weekend.

Some of which celebrating will definitely consist of doing as little as possible in as comfortable a bed as possible.Report
