This Labor Day will mark the 11th I’ve worked at my current employer, not in the same job but in two very similar ones. (My 10 year anniversary was a few weeks ago.)

I plan to spend most of the weekend asleep. Though part of me is hoping for the energy to attend the state fair. Need to skritch some goats’ polls and some horses’ noses to get me through another year of no longer living with livestock nearby. Still we could skip ONE year…

And I’m excited about gaming, of course. Plus the taco salad made by our host. I LOVE HIS TACO SALAD.Report

You could skip a year. I live in Pueblo (West), and rarely go. Usually, I have a slight urge for the fair food, but there’s better unhealthy food that I can buy for less money.Report

    • Maribou in reply to Jason says:

@jason In the past when I’ve skipped it I’ve mourned it for months. I wasn’t kidding about my country kid jones for farm animals (and for women’s institutes/ladies’ auxiliary/4H exhibits) and that’s a lot harder to replace than the fair food…Report

      • Jason in reply to Maribou says:

Aaaaah. Makes sense. There may not be many farm animals there as this is the closing weekend. (I’m really NOT trying to talk you out of this.) If you have the jones for the fair, you should go. You should probably plan on going to the Chile fest later in the month as well.Report

        • Maribou in reply to Jason says:

@jason There are always ENOUGH farm animals on closing weekend (esp. horses – I grew up with horses always around and I miss them, but I could always go riding or something).

I’m too much of a wuss for chile fest but I have a friend (sometimes-commenter @dman’s wife) who goes most years.Report

          • Jason in reply to Maribou says:

The thing about green chile heat is that it doesn’t linger. We don’t go as spicy as we did when younger. That’s one of things I like about the green chiles: they have a burn, but it doesn’t linger in the mouth. I’m probably a bit biased as green chile is one of the great things about Pueblo.Report

            • Maribou in reply to Jason says:

@jason Oh, yeah, I do love me some green chile (esp. from Alameda, sorry Pueblo :D), but my capacity for enjoyment is very limited. Between allergies and a screwed-up digestive system, I get maybe one dish made with it and that’s it. (I realize “I’m a wuss” wasn’t real clear about that but it’s less tedious than talking about all my stupid physical complaints.) I hope you have a fantabulous time though!Report

Camping! On the coast, which should be very cool, literally and figuratively.

My dad was a judge at the county fair when I was a kid (plumbs, apples and such), so I generally avoid them. Much to the dismay of most of the women I have been involved with.Report

I have exactly two weeks until all hell breaks loose at work. A certain company with fruit for their logo is getting to release a device which will apparently be very popular and we will be in charge of making sure said devices are in the public’s hands very quickly. So it will be 2-3 weeks of 14 hour days. I’m trying to get all the nagging items knocked out at work so I can devote all my attention to taking care of my team during the insanity.

Beyond that, we have vague plans to go to the movies (I’m hearing good things about Wind River). I have lots on the DVR. Various fun projects around the house (I’ve introduced my wife to Lean Six Sigma and now she wants to 5S the whole house).

And lots of rain. Hurricane Harvey has finally reached the Ohio Valley.Report

This was the first week of preschool, so I will be busy recovering.

We’re looking at getting another dog, so I’m been on the hunt. We haven’t quite found what we were looking for. A lot of pet adoption places are getting more and more particular about who they will adopt to. More than a couple won’t let smokers adopt. Two asked if we were taking any anti-depressant medications. A lot of them won’t adopt to anyone further than an hour away. It’s pretty frustrating.Report

    • Maribou in reply to Will Truman says:

@will-truman I’ve noticed that before and it’s ridiculous. Like, I think it’s their way of dealing with all the heartbreak and misery they’ve seen, and pretending they can keep the ones they adopt safe at least by using dumb control checkboxes, but they are losing sight of the big picture. (Perhaps also some hoarding-denial justification going on, for some.) I don’t like being audited before I adopt a pet. Basic check, yes, but not what meds I’m taking!

If there is a kill shelter around, they are likely to be a lot less picky (but also to have a lot more potential issues). One thing you might want to do – not that you were asking for advice – is let your vet know you all are ready to adopt again and if she sees the right kind of dog, give you a ring. (Assuming you like your old vet.) Vets are big softies and will often rescue an animal from its owner with the owner’s consent… then put it up for adoption. And if they already know you and they’re not dumb, they know you’re a good pet owner.

Fortunately/unfortunately, everyone knows we adopt ex-ferals and cats with violent neuroses and cats that normally don’t trust anyone for months – instead of the Aviary, we’re now the home for Stray and Wayward Felines – so I don’t think we’ll ever be deliberately looking again. But it could happen!Report

Seems like “Zero Tolerance” rules have spread to shelters adopting out pets. Interesting.

I mean, by all means, don’t adopt out to someone who already has fifteen pets or something and seems like an animal hoarder, or maybe if you know someone had convictions for animal cruelty. But really? Not adopting to someone on antidepressants? That seems kind of cruel, especially since the “connection with an animal” is one of the things that’s suggested to elevate a person’s mood.

And as for vets: a good friend of my family adopted her most recent cat through a vet. Though that was more a case of, “This cat’s owner died and we need a place for her FAST” and the vet knew Debbie had been a good cat-owner in the past and had recently lost her cat to old age…I think there was maybe a little arm-twisting too, because Debbie had said she “wasn’t ready” yet, but then decided she was.

I have allergies and couldn’t have a furry pet. (And fish, while they’re nice and all – it seems a lot of work for the return you get. I want a pet I can PET)

Sometimes I think though maybe I should get tested for feather allergies again, and if I’m good, figure out some kind of parrot or parrot-adjacent bird I could adopt; they seem pretty cool. (Oh, I’d do all the reading up and learning I had to do and do stuff like get rid of my non-stick pans and everything….I wouldn’t go into it blindly)Report

This looks like it is going to be a rare hot weekend in SF and it is also largely empty because of Burning Man.

That means, I think I will go to the beach.Report

I’m going home to Canada for a week. My Mum is anxious for a visit and I’m going to get to go to my ancestral island and look at the crumbling remnants of my childhood memories. It’ll be nicer than it sounds. Nova Scotian autumns are gorgeous. It won’t be fun though, my Mum is feuding with her not-daughter in law and I have to try and untangle that disaster to get her access to her only grandchildren (because I sure as hell don’t want to provide any!).Report
