In my alter ego, I’m studying to be a priest in the Anglican Church. With The League’s permission, I’m posting a link to the audio of a sermon I gave recently at my home church.
The text of my sermon is The Book of Jonah. You can read that book–an excellent, four short chapters–here (in the search function type Jonah).
Chris Dierkes (aka CJ Smith). 29 years old, happily married, adroit purveyor and voracious student of all kinds of information, theories, methods of inquiry, and forms of practice. Studying to be a priest in the Anglican Church in Canada. Main interests: military theory, diplomacy, foreign affairs, medieval history, religion & politics (esp. Islam and Christianity), and political grand bargains of all shapes and sizes.
I’m on for a United Church sometime in early May in Kitsilano. I’ll let you know if you’re interested.
Bob,
Not so much–but I think you can hear it in the audio, I got like a near standing ovation. Really odd.
Though the first time I was ever drunk though was as a 11 year old having to finish off the altar wine after being the altar server. I get in the car for my dad to drive me home and I’m trying not to giggle (or puke) to give it away. To this day I’m a beer man. I drink some wine at mass and that’s it. I’m a weakling when it comes to wine–it just destroys my stomach, I don’t know what it is.
Chris, that story probably rings true for many. My alter boy days were similar. There was never enough leftover wine to get tipsy but it was always a sneaky treat to drink what little there was.
Borat, Art, and the Eye of the Beholder
Borat: “I do a picture, only small, of the Tishnik Masacre. Where many Uzbeks…crushed!”
Kindly Gray Hippie: “How did you feel when you drew this?”
Borat: “Very proud!”.
KGH: “I’m just listening with sadness…a little sadness for your people…?”
Borat: “Yes…no, it is not sad. It is us who do the kill!”
When in doubt, consult the classics [5:30 mark].

Nobel Peace Prize Jury Faces Formal Inquiry Read the story here. Here’s the paragraph that would make clicking through worthwhile, if you’re still undecided:
If the Stockholm County Administrative Board, which supervises foundations in Sweden’s capital, finds that prize founder Alfred Nobel’s will is not being honored, it has the authority to suspend award decisions going back three years — though that would be unlikely and unprecedented, said Mikael Wiman, a legal expert working for the county. Good sermon. When are you speaking next? I’m not a church goer any longer but I’d make an exception to see one of the Gents.
Any sort of after service fest? Leftover wine?
