Parents consistently rate their child’s education far higher than the country as a whole.

Freddie deBoer used to blog at lhote.blogspot.com, and may again someday. Now he blogs here.
Borat, Art, and the Eye of the Beholder
Borat: “I do a picture, only small, of the Tishnik Masacre. Where many Uzbeks…crushed!”
Kindly Gray Hippie: “How did you feel when you drew this?”
Borat: “Very proud!”.
KGH: “I’m just listening with sadness…a little sadness for your people…?”
Borat: “Yes…no, it is not sad. It is us who do the kill!”
When in doubt, consult the classics [5:30 mark].

Over on the Mindless Diversions site...
Our intrepid commenter A Teacher tells the story of how he published his NaNoWriMo book (and, of course, tells us how we can get a copy of it for ourselves). ( 1 comments)
Nobel Peace Prize Jury Faces Formal Inquiry
Read the story here. Here’s the paragraph that would make clicking through worthwhile, if you’re still undecided:
If the Stockholm County Administrative Board, which supervises foundations in Sweden’s capital, finds that prize founder Alfred Nobel’s will is not being honored, it has the authority to suspend award decisions going back three years — though that would be unlikely and unprecedented, said Mikael Wiman, a legal expert working for the county. Sure – I have lots of friends with kids that haven’t started school yet and they are very opinionated about public schools. My wife and I have one in high school and one in the 5th grade and our opinions on public education are a lot different. Quite simply, it will be what you make of it.
People also love their own lawsuits but hate those of others. People also seem to relentlessly reelect their own incumbents but want other peoples pol’s thrown out. People love federal spending in their area but know that fed spending on others is pork.
A lot of opinions aren’t based on data more then personal experience and are formed around preexisting beliefs and tribal identity.
People also love to rate themselves as being of above average intelligence while simultaneously believing that everyone they don’t know is a moron. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if they also tend to think that their own children are of above average intelligence (and therefore their local school must be doing something right) while thinking everyone else’s children are morons.
My schools are fine. I just worry about the schools in the places where people tend to not be polled.
Lake Wobegon Effect
I once read that 70% of drivers think they are “above average.”
