ThinkProgress can’t distinguish between “death panels” and euthanasia

This is pretty dumb: Apparently, if you’re against irresponsible rumor-mongering about death panels you’re also not allowed to raise legitimate concerns about euthanasia.

I think its dumbness is up in the air until we get a chance to read the cover story. If death panels are part of the ‘Creeping Culture of Euthanasia’, then TP will retroactively have a point. They’ll just be guilty of relying too much on an educated guess. And just to pack supposition on supposition, I will be very (pleasantly) surprised if there’s no apologia for death panel hysteria in the article, given the ideological overlap and incentives.

But that is not to say that it’s entirely possible to have a reasoned (or even fear-mongering) debate about euthanasia without endorsing the death panel canard.

It doesn’t make me wonder what they were debating last month; it makes me wonder whether Andy McCarthy has any clue what’ll be in the magazine he works for before publication. Here’s the summary of the article in question: “A powerful myth is propelling the assisted-suicide movement: the notion that Oregon’s experiment with legalized assisted suicide has been a success, in which problems and abuses are rare or nonexistent.” The actual story doesn’t seem to endorse the stupid position he held against his editors last month. Well, at least they’ve got his back when it comes to hating Muslims.

The cover is certainly playing on the Death Panel paranoia. But whatever, it’s just a cheap gimmick.
