Peter Suderman doesn’t like Pearl Jam’s latest album

In all honesty – other than their excellent live album “Live on Two Legs” – I haven’t liked a Pearl Jam album since “Vitalogy”.  Oh, they’ve had some great songs on some of their later albums.  “No Code” is about half good. “Yield” maybe a third of the songs were decent.  But when I listen to Pearl Jam these days it’s pretty much just their first three excellent releases and a few scattered later songs.  I keep hoping for a comeback, but less and less as the years pass.

Here’s their latest music video. (For a long time they didn’t make videos.)

I quite like their new album. It’s not as good as their first four albums (No Code is actually my favorite of the bunch), but it’s their best offering in quite a while. Other than the song “Speed of Sound” it’s a solid punk’esque album from start to finish.

I haven’t listened to the entire thing, actually. I should have mentioned that. I just feel totally underwhelmed by all their recent efforts.

E.D.,
Yeah, I figured you hadn’t since it isn’t officially out yet. Also, I would agree that Pearl Jam’s recent efforts haven’t been a good representation of what they’re clearly capable of creating. I just think that Backspacer is good despite the shift in style.
