I’ve been in exactly the situation where Izrael’s pepper spray suggestion actually makes a lot of sense. Personally, I couldn’t have brought myself to use it, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to recognize the unique difficulties that men have in escaping abusive situations given the (generally very reasonable) preconceptions that people have about violent incidents between men and women.
Before you apply, you might consider whether this job requires more intellectual heft than the position of economics editor over at the Atlantic. No reason to aim so high.
