Mashup Part Deux – Quote of the Day + Chart of the Day

“I know it’s a big issue with the Ottawa media elite and some of the elites in our country, but I got to tell you if reaction in my constituency is any indication, I’ve had maybe three dozen emails.” - Industry Minister Tony Clement on the prorogation of Parliament

The “Ottawa media elite?” Good to know political discourse is similarly debased across the Anglosphere

Yeah, I’m not sure what a Canadian elite would be either. Is that when you can get someone else to shovel your driveway?

“Elite” = people who vote for a party other than Conservatives.

The longer Harper stays in power, the more his administration sounds like Atwater and Rove.

Spending enough time in Ottawa’s downtown core, and being plugged in enough, I would have to say that there is something resembling an “Ottawa media elite”. However, I don’t think they can be appropriately used as some sort of bugaboo fabricating controversies for any particular government.

I’d suggest the real idiocy here is that our Industry Minister (and, correct me if I’m wrong, Ontario’s former Finance Minister) seems to think that perusing his inbox is a representative sample of Canadian opinion.

Doesn’t anyone understand Maths?

I thought this part was more interesting:

“It may not be what the chattering classes want, but we’re not here to govern on behalf of the chattering classes,” he said.”

Actually, you are. You govern on behalf of everyone.

On the other hand, the poll only shows the results of the 2/3 of Canadians polled who were aware of Parliament being prorogued at all (granted, the non-aware probably overlaps fairly heavily with the non-voting). But that still gives 40% of the total number polled being opposed versus 21% supportive and 40% not knowing/not caring. I’d say 40% of Canadians is more than just “the elites” or “the chattering classes”.
