More Buyer’s Remorse

Apparently I’m not the only one with doubts. Though, I must say, Krugman is a fair bit more defeatist than my own counter-factual postulated.

Well to be fair, Krugman never liked Obama much. I actually had to stop reading him during the campaign because he ended up such a shill for Hillary.

And that headline…everyone seems to misunderstand that line. Obama was explicitly disavowing being “the one we were waiting for” and instead insisting that it was us, ourselves, as active citizens in our communities.

That’s fair, yes. And as mentioned, I’m not as gloomy as Krugman. In terms of the messaging, that might have been Obama’s message, but I think Krugman correctly uses the message as it was popularly received/understood.

Yeah Krugman was pretty much Hillary’s Sullivan.

Consider that Jimmy Carter was graced with Democratic majorities in Congress larger than Obama has (though the Democratic caucus was at that time much more variegated ideologically than is the case today) and was stymied in most of his efforts. Mr. Carter, it should be recalled, had experience as a public executive and two serious careers (in engineering and agribusiness) before entering politics. Obama’s a bantamweight in comparison.

I think if Dr. Krugman or anyone else expected much of anything they were bound to be disappointed. The institutional set up has a strong bias toward stagnation and corruption, quite apart from the intentions of the Administration of the day. As for intentions, I doubt there has been an Administration more inclined to crony capitalism in living memory.
