Magic Bus

Public Service Announcement: The League of Ordinary Gentlemen officially endorses letting your kid walk to school. Also: I hope there’s a special circle of hell reserved for busy-body elementary school administrators.

I know this sounds good on paper – but in how many places is this even possible? My kids would have to walk 5 miles and 15 miles respectively to their schools. Even when they were in elementary school and it was close it involved crossing two major roads and walking a decent stretch with no sidewalks.

My kids also would need to walk for miles and miles. (I wish the bus were only thruppence and sixpence each day.)

My old school district is moving in the opposite direction much to the anger of parents. As they’ve built new elementary schools, they’ve cut bus routes significantly and then cut them further for existing schools (moving the “walkable” distance from .5 miles to 1.5). Parents relied on the bus routes and are uncomfortable with their kids walking any significant distance to school. It’s a serious political issue with the school board.

In Japan, kids are actually forced to walk to school until high school, when they’re forced to ride a bicycle. No cars, no excuses.
