Why does the Canadian Supreme Court dress like Santa Claus? Do they give gifts to all the litigants, or only to the ones on the "nice" list?

This certainly happens, but it's really not very common, I don't think. First, you actually have to have the money (as you won't have insurance), and even then, there is a fairly conventional opinion that our health care is so much better than the US's that I don't think many people really think of going down south.

Now, it does happen (and there's also been people going to India for Liberation Therapy), and when it happens, it often makes the news. There was also a case in the last 5(?) years in which the supreme court determined that OHIP (Ontario's health insurance program) had to pay for a woman's treatment in the US because Ontario hospitals were not providing her with the necessary care in a timely fashion. I don't think that situation has ever been duplicated, though.

This might sound like a joke, but I actually mean it: Isn't this what they consider the US for? Do you think that if there wasn't the option of coming to the US, that Canada might do more to address accommodating those who want something and can pay for it? I apologize for sounding snotty, and it's probably ignorant, but I've always sort of been under the impression that we provide a way for Canada to proudly proclaim equality without actually denying those with means better and comparatively convenient options unavailable to others.

I'm not sure that's really an option under the Canada Health Act. Also, it wouldn't, at least in the short-run, address hospital overcrowding (if someone actually had the resources to pay for it on their own).

Yeah, me too. If it's just the family being delusional, I think it kind of detracts from their overall arguments. However, I've now read that other doctors are seeing it.
