No one’s been paying a ton of attention to Mitt Romney’s campaign thus far, distracted as we all are by the rotating cast of Sideshow Bobs that compose the rest of the GOP field. And that seems to have been, on the whole, fine as far as Team Romney is concerned. My guess is there are a few reasons why. Mitt would rather not engage in sniping contests with his GOP opponents (his relationship with the base is tenuous enough already without his making their Savior of the Moment look a fool); and, at this early date, he’d like to keep his head down and go about the dull, vital, work of raising money and locking-down important local, regional, and national GOP kingmakers.
Another reason Mitt’s been keeping it subterranean? Down there, it’s much, much easier to lie:
The Romney campaign’s very first television ad, released this evening, dishonestly presents a 2008 McCain campaign quote as the words of President Obama. The ad features a voice-over of Obama saying “if we keep talking about the economy, we’re going to lose.” Then-candidate Obama indeed said those words, perhaps dozens of times during the closing month of the 2008 campaign. The only problem? Obama was actually quoting the words of a strategist from Sen. John McCain’s campaign.
This ad is the most prominent example of what’s actually been a consistent theme of Romney’s campaign against Obama. Whether it concerns the defense budget, Obama’s beliefs about American exceptionalism, who’s at fault for the lousy economy, the President’s calling Americans lazy, or supposedly unprecedented cuts to Medicare, Romney’s consistently run a campaign against the President that, even by the debased standards of national politics, is brazen in its dishonesty. Once Romney is the nominee and the Presidential stage shrinks to a size just small enough to hold only two candidates, these kind of baldfaced lies won’t be able to sail by without the media’s scrutiny, however lacking we political junkies may often find it to be; and one thing candidate Romney doesn’t need is more grist for those who’d portray him as a craven opportunist.
But as long as Romney’s still just one of many candidates — and, as the past few weeks have made abundantly clear, far from the most entertaining of the bunch — he can intersperse these lies between his more legitimate complaints and suffer only minor blowback as a result. Well, there’s one thing you could always say about Mitt Romney, something this ad shows with vivid clarity: The man wants to find himself sitting in the Oval Office come January 20, 2013, and he’ll do whatever it takes to get there.

Once again, Republican politicians and pundits demonstrate that when reality conflicts with their (frequently irrational and hyperbolic) rhetoric, they opt to ignore reality.
Romney and the other GOP candidates really don’t give a crap whether their talking points are factually accurate — all that matters is whether they can successfully sell their tripe to the American voting public.
The character and ethical conduct of candidates on the campaign trail is likely a reflection of the manner in which they would run the Executive Branch should they be elected POTUS. If they blatantly lie so easily in order to garner a few votes, they will no doubt conduct themselves in a similar unethical, Machiavellian manner when promoting public policy while in the White House.
