Two somewhat odd statistics about the American West... Smaller numbers of much bigger suburban cities in the western metro areas, compared to eastern metros, is the norm. There are good historical reasons why this is the case. Western suburbs also tend to be denser when you consider only the parts that can be built out. There are good geographic reasons why this is the case. Phoenix is an exception on density; unsurprising, because the geographic drivers aren't present there.
